Many People think that the Holocaust was the first and only genocide that ever occurred; however, this is not the case. In the former Ottoman Empire, a genocide occurred from 1915 to 1918 between the Armenians and the Turks.
Firstly, the Ottoman Empire existed from 1299 to 1923 and was one of the largest empires to rule the borders of the Mediterranean Sea. At the height of its power, it included: Anatolia, the Middle
East, part of North Africa, and Southeastern Europe. Ottoman Empire extended its borders into Europe and North Africa. The empire covered the Caucasus, the Taurus, the Atlas and the Balkan mountain ranges. The Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea was also incorporated into the empire. On the other hand, Armenia is located in the southern Caucasus and is the smallest of the former Soviet republics. It is bounded by Georgia on the north, Azerbaijan on the east, Iran on the south, and Turkey on the west. Contemporary Armenia is a fraction of the size of ancient Armenia.
Secondly, what exactly is “genocide?” “Genocide” can be defined as “the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.” Therefore, what happened between the Armenians and the young Turks is a clear example of genocide.
Additionally, the Ottoman Empire was established by a tribe of Oghuz Turks in Western Anatolia and ruled by the Osmanlı dynasty. The empire later grew to include many areas in what is now present-day Europe to and which eventually became…
