They could not change what was going on even if they tried to.Still with all this hate the Armenian people prospered getting good education and income for the time. This heightened between the two groups as of their resentment for the Armenian people doing well. In the late 19th Century after years of prosper the Ottoman Empire started to collapse losing lots of it's land in Europe and Africa. This caused problems in the government and economics creating pressure between ethnic groups. The government was afraid that the Armenian people would side with a christian based government during the war like Russians and go against them to regain power in their country. This started a campaign through the Armenian people to win basic civil rights. They had enough of being second class citizens in their own nation and wanted to be free of rule by another government. Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II did not agree with this revolt and answered the campaign with sending Turkish military officials, soldiers and ordinary men to sack Armenian villages and cities ending in a massacre of their citizens. The Turkish government sent out people to arrest and execute seven hundred Armenians. After that more and more Armenians started to get executed turning into a full scale massacre. They were taken out of their home and sent on death marches through the desserts without any food or water. Many were shot being killed right on the spot. Other ways they were killed were during deportations, under other conditions of starvation, dehydration, exposure, and disease. To make things harsher and quicker others were involved in executions into mass graves while others were sent to concentration camps. The Turkish government also sent out killing squads to completely eliminate any Christian elements in the country. Many of these squads murdered and ex-convicts. Killing people by drowing, throwing them off cliffs, burning, and crucifying them. Families were separated with the turkish government taking tens of thousands of Armenian children who were converted to Islam giving them to Turkish families while the rest of their Armenian family was killed. This horrible genocide finally ended in 1922 with only 388,000 Armenians remaining in the Ottoman Empire
