In 1984, Alexey Pajitnov, a Russian mathematician, created the popular puzzle game of Tetris (Video Game History Timeline). Everyone wanted to make their mark with video games. This happened to Shigeru Miyamoto when he created the Legend of Zelda and to SSI when it won the video game license for Dungeons and Dragons in 1987 (Video Game History Timeline). Years progressed and new companies started to emerge with the development of some of these classic games. Sony released the PlayStation in the U.S. during 1995 (Video Game History Timeline). Nintendo had been developing major turning point games for year, but it was until 1998 did they come up with one of the most memorable. During this year, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time transported players to the richly imagined world of Hyrule, full of engaging characters, thought-provoking puzzles, and the most memorable musical instrument to ever appear in a video game (Video Game History Timeline). Ever since then, new consoles have been invented. The XBox, Wii, and HoloLens has all been created in the 21st century. The HoloLens has been the newest invention to date, allowing user to explore virtual reality. Virtual reality can be described as the use of computer technology to create the effect of an interactive three-dimensional world in which the object have a sense of spatial presence (Bryson). This face-to-face chat allows the player to see who they are actually playing with. Also known as video conferencing, video chatting can come cheaper and faster than in-person meetings (Powell). Many companies have made services that allow you to video chat while you play. One of the top contenders for chatting was Google Hangouts. When Google hangouts came out in 2011, it had been praised as one of the most seamless, easy to use video chat services ever (Henry). Although video has been used for gaming purposes, people mostly use it just for connection purposes similar to telephone calls. This may be one of the main reasons why video chatting hasn’t been the top means of communicating during games.
Messaging can also be used as a means of communication while playing video games. An individual may send and receive messages with friends and people that they have recently played a game with. They can also log onto online message boards to chat. In 2008, the Pew Study found that gamers were more civically active than non-gaming and were more likely to take part in outside experiences such as commenting on these internet message boards (Positive Effects). This messaging, in all forms, allows adolescents to express themselves and work together towards one
