Straight out of college Miyamoto decided to join Nintendo in hopes of designing toys. However at that time Nintendo was exploring the market of coin operated video games. The president of Nintendo assigned Miyamoto to create the promotional and cabinet art for their new video games "Sherriff" and "Radar Scope". After the release of the two games, which did significantly well in Japan, they realized that Namco was making a lot of profit off of the American market and as a result Nintendo decided to release "Sherriff" and "Radar Scope" in America. While designing Miyamoto wanted to create a game based on Popeye and his never-ending struggle to save his damsel, Olive Oyl, from Bluto. However Nintendo could not obtain the license to it so he decided to take the concept and implement it into a King Kong theme. In the game "Jumpman" , who later became Mario, had to climb up a construction site while having to dodge fire and barrels thrown at him and save his girlfriend Pauline from Donkey Kong. Nintendo's president Hiroshi Yamauchi realized that Miyamoto's game was the one that would save Nintendo. Donkey Kong easily became a hit worldwide and saved Nintendo but also made it one of the major players in the American video game market. Donkey Kong is without a doubt one of video games biggest contributors for both the spread of video games but also the growth of the video game industry and market. As stated by game journalist Travis Fahs, " if you can't imagine a world without Super Mario Brothers, without the NES, and maybe even without Nintendo at all, then you can't imagine a world without Donkey
