Under our workplace rights we have the right to be treated fairly at work, to work in a safe and healthy workplace, to be trained to deal with workplace hazards, and to join a trade union. It’s the absolute law. The Employment Standards Act, the Equity Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Labour Relations Act protect those, and others rights. Our basic rights under the employment standards act is that we should get a regular pay day and a pay stub that is clear, to be paid overtime pay after 44 hours of work each week, also entitlement to take days of public holidays and in Ontario we have nine public holidays; although alternatively they can agree in writing to work on holidays and we’ll get paid. A major key in work place rights is the basics of pay equity. The right to equal pay for work of equal value. In Ontario, both men and women have the right to receive equal pay for doing work that may be very different in nature, but is equal value. In my own opinion I believe that this very important to understand and must be incorporated in every country around the world.
