Stereotypes defining the older generations as“senile, slow, unproductive, frail, and unable to ‘learn new tricks’” make finding jobs harder for those who are in their forties or older (Rothenberg and Gardner 11). Although these stereotypes may be accurate in some cases, they do not apply to all, employers need to consider everything the employee has to offer before passing them up. The unemployment rate of those over forty equals two times the number of those younger than forty (Leonhardt). The fact that there are more people over forty unemployed than, proves that age discrimination can cause major issues. For example, Texas Roadhouse has been issued a number of age discrimination when hiring the front of the house employees. The front of the house employees, or “Roadies,” are expected to be energetic and young with a passion for fun and because of this “only 1.9% of Roadhouse front of the house positions [are] held by those over 40,”which is below the labor market percentage and the industry averages for the age group (Leonhardt). Employers will often undervalue youth labor, viewing their needs as less than those of adults and reducing their income (Despoja 400). Employers think that younger employees seem less experienced and will not work as hard as their older counterparts. Employers think that younger people might not be as serious about their job and will not fully commit to their work like someone with more maturity. Even though they may not be as experienced, younger people can be trained, so choosing not to hire someone because they seem young and ill equipped is an unacceptable excuse. People should be hired based on their abilities and credentials rather than how they appear due to their
