While working in the emergency department at Aga Khan Hospital for six years I became familiar with many different forms of technology used in the health care environment. We used the electronic medical record (EMR), picture archiving and communication system (PACS) – a health care technology used for short and long term storage, management and distribution of medical images, lab tests, MRI tests, and CT scans. On my unit we also used portable x-ray and ultrasound machines, arterial blood gas (ABG) machines, and blood glucose monitoring devices. When I was working as a patient care coordinator, I was responsible for arranging beds for emergency room patients being transferred to other units in the hospital or to outside health care facilities.

In my hospital, a patient would be given an individual computer generated medical record number (MRN), which would allow us to access information at our main campus, as well as at three different campuses located in Karachi, Pakistan. Some patients need admission to a unit, some need more medications and further treatment, some are under observation, and some need to be discharged. Sometimes there 's shortage of beds in the emergency department and the hospital due to an over capacity of patients. This frequently occurs when there 's a widespread viral infection happening or an environmental or manmade disaster. I 've worked in a 62 bed emergency department, but due to the limitations of space, we still have had to transfer patients to different hospitals for care. Our hospital provided lists of various health care locations to transfer our patients and share their data in the form of a referral summary via both phone and email. In comparison to the health care system back home I feel very fortunate to be in Canada, where there is free health care, unlike my country, where it 's essential to purchase health care insurance. In the future, I hope in my country the government will expand their hospitals and provide the funds and resources to give health care access to
