While working in the emergency department at Aga Khan Hospital for six years I became familiar with many different forms of technology used in the health care environment. We used the electronic medical record (EMR), picture archiving and communication system (PACS) – a health care technology used for short and long term storage, management and distribution of medical images, lab tests, MRI tests, and CT scans. On my unit we also used portable x-ray and ultrasound machines, arterial blood gas (ABG) machines, and blood glucose monitoring devices. When I was working as a patient care coordinator, I was responsible for arranging beds for emergency room patients being transferred to other units in the hospital or to outside health care facilities. On one night shift, a patient was admitted who had been involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA). I immediately began my assessment and history taking, I found out that he was riding his bike alone when the accident occurred and bystanders brought him in. On his arrival his Glasgow coma scale (GCS) was 3/15, he was completely unresponsive, and there were no vital signs present. Our team called a code blue and instantly began performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The trauma team was notified and arrived to assess the patient.
