Sleep deprivation is a factor that deeply affects many college students around the United States. College life can become really difficult, between the stress and poor time-management some student can fall into bad habits, for example; a large portion of students often fall into voluntary sleep deprivation. College student often tend to have lack of sleep during the week and make up for those hours during the weekends. When the final exams seasons comes around college student deprive themselves so much of sleep that they may lack 24 to 48 hours of sleep. This may result in low grades and more stress. The question is, are college student aware of this matter or in how it affects their abilities to normally function?
June Picher and Amy Walters authors of the article “How sleep deprivation affects psychological variables related to college students’ cognitive performance” did a study based on the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance and psychological variables in relation with cognitive performances. For this experiment the researchers selected a small amount of student from five different psychology classes. 65 students volunteer but only 44 students concluded the trial; 18 males and 26 females. Every student was assign to a sleep derivate group or a nondeprived. As part of the experiment each person was required to sign an agreement to allow the experiment to perform.
