When you think of advertising, what do you think of? Some common answers for this would probably be billboards, television commercials, or even the popup computer ads. For me, I always think of those stupid political ads they play every four years. No matter what their format or how they are presented, they all have one thing in common: they are trying to persuade people to purchase their product, to buy into something, or to vote for someone who would make a terrible president. Another common source of advertising is magazines. They are absolutely filled to the brim with ads: that’s pretty much all they are, anyway. I took an advertisement from an All You magazine and analyzed how it persuades, whom it is targeting, and how it is intended to work. At first glance, the advertisement is just like any other: in the middle of a magazine no one reads anymore. Exploring further, I see two older women in the middle of the ad. They are advertising Always Discreet lady products so I think it’s safe to assume that they are targeting not just older women, but all women that have bladder problems. The advertisement shows an older white woman laughing away while an older black woman laughs with her. It is targeting both white and black women, and shows that they are equal to a degree; this is something people care about now-a-days. The ad suggests that if you have bladder leaks, you can’t laugh as hard. But with the products advertised, you can laugh as hard as you want to. It’s…
