Newport Cigarette Advertisement Analysis

Advertisements are deceiving; cigarette companies use them to target consumers of different social statuses, race, and ages. The majority of the ads portray an image that makes the consumer believe that if they use their product they will look or be as happy as the person shown in the ad. Yet many ads do not show the side effect that their product can have or the effect it can cause on the consumers health. For example in my ad, it tries to convince young adults to buy Newport cigarettes. The ad targets young adults of all races, making them believe that if they smoke Newport cigarettes they will look as healthy, have a good time, and be cool around their friends and peers when in reality it is not true, therefore this ad is ineffective.

This image is hiding what is realistic. People do not fall for this ad when they see it because they know the severity of smoking cigarettes and how addicting it can become. For instance the ad demonstrates these huge white smiles but the truth is cigarettes actually yellow your teeth due to the tobacco. With time teeth begin to yellow and it does not stop there after time there can also be gum diseases. The ad shows healthy young adults enjoying themselves yet people know the truth about the causes of smoking cigarettes. Things such as respiratory problems, heart diseases, and lung cancer. This targets young adults of all races because lots of different people want to look as cool as the people in the ad. However, the ad fails at making the people in the ad look cool because in reality smoking a cigarette is not cool. Cigarettes tend to bug people, especially the ones that do not smoke because of the strong smell and smoke. It is restricted in many places because many people do not want that around themselves or families etc. This ad aims to target young people but it is not really the young people smoking the cigarettes, young people do not find smoking a cigarette cool. Laws made also increased the age on purchasing tobacco from 18 to 21 which only makes it much harder for a young adult to pick up smoking cigarettes because by then most young adults are mature and not worried about impressing
