Students, from a young age, are encouraged to do their best, and find an area of study that interests them. This is much different than in China where students are pushed to study mainly the material that will be on the gaokao, and are not able to explore their interests until after attending a university. In the Unites States, students take an array of classes that cater to different interests. In the last two years of high school students take a test like the gaokao, the SAT, but it is not nearly as rigorous or stressful. This kind of test is an aptitude test and is likely to predict how students will do at different universities; the universities then use this test to either admit or omit students, but virtually most students that want to attend a college or university can get in somewhere. Some even quit their jobs to live with their children, near the school, to dedicate themselves to their kids and help keep them focused on their studies. Their husbands have to work even harder to make up for the loss of income, just to support their children’s schooling. In the United States parents make ends meet to support their children to get proper educations but the sacrifice is not as extreme, as opposed to a family in rural China. For example, mothers in China share a one room apartment with their child, and sacrifice their time to plan around and for their child’s schedule.
