These tests have been a burden to students in America for more than 50 years, but now they are far more competitive and the stakes are much higher than ever before. The ACT and SAT have become one of the largest deciding factors in the college admissions process, and the inability to score high on the test could mean getting denied by your “dream college” or not being admitted into college at all. The test itself is supposed to assess students, teachers, and the school. High scores reflect that the school is effective in teaching students the given material and low scores reflect that the school and the teachers are not teaching the students properly. These scores are then compared to other schools to see if their overall program is helping students succeed and the scores are used to rank the school’s performance on a national, and even global scale. Are these standardized tests effective in measuring the educational quality students are receiving and the readiness for a higher education? No matter what side one takes on the topic, there is no doubt that standardized testing has an effect on education and an education system without tests would be much different than it is

Standardized tests are only able to measure a few of the many important aspects of what is a meaningful and worthwhile education. In the article "The Myths of Standardized Testing,”by Valerie Strauss, the book The Myths of Standardized Tests: Why They Don’t Tell You What You Think They Do is summerized into a short consensus that standerized testing is not good enough to meat the stander set by the no child left behind laws. "Creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, integrity,"(Strauss) are only some of the things that a standardized test fail to examine. If these tests are only testing one part of the education system then why are they being used to see the progress of a student? Maybe instead of coming up with more and more tests that all measure the same thing, maybe test makers should find a different way to measure other parts that are important to…

Within the education system, there are many reasons why standardized testing is flawed. While many government officials believe that standardized testing has more advantages than disadvantages, parents, teachers and students are facing oppressed teaching, a bleak education, narcissism, and a lack of respect for teaching. “We don’t need more data that continue to compare students to each other. We don’t need more standardized test data to keep telling the kids in the 95th percentile how superior they are and the kids who score below average that they still need improvement”(Nieto 58 “Still Teaching in Spite of It All”). Nieto tells about how not only students, but teachers and parents are affected by high-stakes standardized testing.…

Although standardized tests, I believe are essential because they assist educators and parents with identifying the child’s strengths and weaknesses. However, at the same time, these test results are relatively provided to teachers for the up and coming year, and are not available for the current academic year for both parents and educators to provide the necessary support needed to move students forward academically, thus causing students, parents, and educators to fail substantially. Consequently, approximately 30 percent of the United States’, over fifty-million students attending both rural and small-town schools, in order to improve innovation in not only Muscogee County, Georgia but other educational systems, I believe the three approaches…
