The death penalty since the beginning of crime and punishment in society has been a controversial issue that challenges people’s beliefs and morals. Everyone has a different view on the idea whether the death penalty should be legal or outlawed in the United States. I have written a few papers on the use of death penalty over my years and my opinion has changed over the years, as did my understanding of morals and the value of human life. I believe the death penalty should be outlawed in the United States. I believe it is morally wrong to take someone’s life that you already hold in custody no matter how heinous the crime is. It is not are duty as humans to play God and decide who lives and dies. I am not a full on religious person, but I do have a strong understanding that life is precious and it is something to value. If we have someone secured for a crime we have no need to kill that person. Many people are given the death penalty to help the community feel safe and provide “Justice” for the victim and the victim’s family. The inmates may have committed an inhumane crime, but we shouldn’t be inhumane too by killing someone. Through my earlier research before this paper I found an incident where a person was killed by the death penalty, but was later found to be innocent. Not only is killing in custody inhumane, but lethal injection, which is one of the forms of killing, is more costly than keeping the prisoner in prison.
