Romell Broom's Argument Against The Death Penalty

Improved Essays
In 1984, Romell Broom was sentenced to death because of kidnapping, raping, and then murdering a 14 year old girl. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection, and the execution attempt didn't happen until 2009. He was then injected at least 18 times before the execution attempt was stopped by the governor. Broom said that the pain was so bad he cried and screamed. His lawyers argued that he should be taken off death row, but he was left on death row (Jabali-Nash). The death penalty shouldn’t be legal because it isn't ethical. I believe this because the criminal isn't always executed, many executed criminals are innocent, the death penalty costs more than life in prison, many ways of execution take a long time, some ways of execution …show more content…
If a criminal is sentenced to life in prison, at least their family can still visit them if they want to. Also, if criminals just received life in prison, their case could be reviewed and they might be proven innocent during that time. Life in prison could also benefit the people. If the criminal was sentenced to death, we would be giving in to the criminal and making it so he/she doesn't have to do the same thing in prison over and over every day for the rest of their life and face monotony. But, if they did serve life in prison, some people might be glad to know that the criminal might be extremely bored, especially if they didn't get any time taken off their sentence for being good in prison. This connects to my argument because it would better for the criminal and for the people who dislike the criminal.
The death penalty is ethical because criminals who do bad enough things, deserve the death penalty.
The story of Romell Broom, a man who survived 18 lethal injection attempts and is still living, is just one of many. Do we really want a world where part of the population goes down just because of the death penalty? With our help, we can try and stop the death

In the year 1992, Cameron Todd Willingham was convicted to the death penalty by a fire that killed his three kids in which the court believe he had purposely started it. Twelve years later the Texas Forensic Science Commission found that the evidence provided was wrongfully interpreted, and the evidence used against Willingham became invalid. The worst part about this heartbreaking story was that it was later known that the fire was actually accidental, and the mistakes of people costed an innocent man his life. Taking away an innocent inmates life should be an eye opener to all of us in this country. Judicial execution should not be legal in the United States for the reasons being that it has a high cost, there have been wrongful executions,…

Steve Earle, a recovering addict, wrote “A Death in Texas”, which he explains how he feels about the death penalty. He describes a pen friend of his named Jonathan that was sentenced to death row. After reading it, I formed my own opinion on capital punishment. Capital punishment should be abolished, reason being, it is not moral, consistent, and it degrades the value of a life. Ending a life, because of a crime is not moral.…

Death sentences are imposed in a criminal justice system that treats you better if you are rich and guilty than if you are poor and innocent. Also if the crime the person committed was vicious crime, they should be sent to death. Because if a dangerous person did something to a innocent person and hurt them in any way, the innocent person would be living the pain its whole life and could be thinking of suicide because of the pain they go through.…

the process will then repeat. Medical personnel will assess the inmate each round but must first wait five minutes due to the scorching body temperature. The death penalty has been one of the most controversial topics in the entire criminal justice system. From the costs, religion, victim impact, inmate and staff psychological effects, botched executions, deterrence, all the way to those who have no opinion at all, the arguments have fallen into several different categories.…

My opinion is people are scared of death, making the death penalty a great deterrence for murder. Life if jail just provides murderers with a place with shelter, food, and sometimes socialization, but is just a more confined way of living. Someone who lives on the street or in the cold for example may find this…

The criminal should receive some pain in return for what they have done to others. Even if the death penalty was put to a stop because of the “pain” the criminals receive, other inmates in the prison would give them “what they deserve” for the crime they committed once they find out what they have done. People in prison still have morals, and if an inmate found out that another inmate killed a child and they had a son or daughter, they might get mad and beat him up, stab him,…

In addition, life sentence fulfills the same two purposes capital punishment was aimed to do. Capital punishment is aimed at isolating malefactors from society by killing while life sentence has a more humane answer by literally isolating them in prisons. Also, capital punishment is aimed at deterring crime which life sentence does better than capital punishment as we can conclude from statistics and polls. Last but not least, life sentence saves…

We should not allow one who has murdered to remain a murderer. The ones truly affected are the victims and the ones sentenced to death no one will shed a tear for. Prison is a vacation for most prisoners they are fed three times a day, have a roof over their heads, and are given jobs. To allow them to live with a life sentence is giving them an easy out not the death penalty. By taking their life they will not be given the luxuries to see family, have meals, and live day to day.…

Whilst some think that the death penalty is a fair sanction, it is an inequitable penance because many convicts on death row suffered from prejudiced trials, were mentally-ill, or were wrongfully accused. There have been hundreds of unjustified deaths from the death penalty. In conclusion, the death sentence is an unnecessary form of punishment that advocates the obliteration of human life. There is no proof whatsoever that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to…

It’s a scary thought to have the life sentence either way. The life sentence keeps criminals from being in the public. It sounds harsh but we would take into consideration the possibility of wrongful conviction and the possibility that the inmate maybe innocent. There is no need in keeping inmates in prison for “life without parole” causing added expenses as an alternative to the death penalty. If the conviction is guilty and death penalty is the sentence then we can help with many expenses, overcrowding and time, resulting in opening up the budget to be used in other areas in need of attention. My express death row idea may be controversial but I believe it’s a plan that will ease many burdens in prisons…

People live in a society that is surrounded by violent behavior for that reason the justice uses the death penalty to send out a positive message for those who tend to commit capital offence. Capital punishment is not an act we wish to place on a single soul, but it is the best way to keep the killer out of society and prevent any further murders. There is no concrete evidence of either positive or negative effect, but this does not mean it would not help lower the crime rate. People need to understand that the best way to prevent any possible murders in the future is not let the killer walk free. The death penalty allows us to see the seriousness of a crime and the value of life.…

Capital punishment should be abolished because it is too expensive to retain, it is revenge not justice, and it 's possible for innocent people to be executed. The execution of human life should not be something we advocate here in the United States, it’s sad that as a nation we preach peace while still executing our citizens. The millions of dollars being wasted on executions could be spent improving our criminal justice system, and in doing so, improve our country. Not only is the death penalty a waste of our hard earned tax dollars, but it also puts innocent lives at risk. Mistreated or mishandled evidence can easily put an innocent life on death row.…
