The sun shined into the bedroom and my heavy, tired eyes eagerly opened. A huge smile was revealed on my face and a burst of chuckles traveled across the room. The laughter of a four-year-old child filled the hallways. The excitement was visible in my coffee-colored eyes as I ran down the stairs. I was elated! Today was February 4th, 2005; it was the day! This was the day that I got to finally play dress up with my mother and baby sister. I expected this day to be the best day of my life! However, it was also the day that changed my life for the worst.
As soon as I reached the last step, I dashed straight forward into the living room. I found my mom sitting on the floor with my little sister, Tianna. My mom was talking on the phone with my dad. He was on a business trip in Washington, D.C., so every morning around 9 o’clock, he would check in with my mom and my sisters over the phone. “Nothing is going to happen to her, Steve,” my mom said as I walked in. Who was my mom speaking about? My little sister? Me? I suddenly felt a pang of unease in my stomach. Yet almost immediately afterward, the feeling of anxiety left me as I began to remember what I actually came downstairs for. Before I could tell her what I had to say, she began telling me that my dad had had nightmares where something bad had happened to me. She said that the nightmares occurred over the last three days.
