The Internal Revenue Service acknowledges 26 various nonprofit formations. Well-known organizations such as the United Way, the Salvation Army and the YMCA accept donations to promote various causes such as charity, education, science, religion or art. With their generous donations, patrons help other, and as an added benefit can write-off their contributions as tax deductions.
Nonprofit groups use the contributions to support their corresponding causes and operating expenses. To qualify as a tax-exempt, or 501(c)(3), entity the founders must incorporate the enterprise. However, there are nonprofit organizations that are not incorporated. Of these entities, the most successful ones share several traits.

Effective nonprofit organizations clearly state their mission and purpose for all interested parties. The agencies limit their scope to a specific cause and publish printed documentation detailing their goals and charitable work.
