• Many aspects of American Education have gone through drastic changes throughout history. Whether it is the change in how people are educated or who can be educated, the 7 themes are presented all throughout our historical development of education. Mann was a child of little education but took advantage of all his options; whether it be studying as much as possible or visiting the library, Mann was determined. At age 20 he enrolled at Brown University where he graduated as valedictorian within three years. Soon after his time at brown University Mann was elected to the legislature in 1827; within ten years Mann was president of Massachusetts State Senate. Although he had not previously had any interest in education he goes on to have the biggest impact. Mann was then elected secretary of the board of education in 1837, where he used his position to enforce some of his most influential work. Mann traveled to every school in the state, so he could examine each school properly. The examinations lead to his annual reports and journals that targeted the public schools and their problems. Mann brought awareness to the problems public schools were facing; he wanted to make a change in education. Mann’s main goal was to have an accessible and affordable education that was offered to everyone, not such someone of a certain social class.
