Hello everyone,
Once again, welcome back to my blog! Today I will be discussing the documentary The Codes of Gender. I watched this documentary in my Media Criticism class and felt strongly enough about this documentary to write a short reaction piece. The documentary has a full running time of approximately seventy minutes, so I will be focusing on sex versus gender as a key point of interest.
The Codes of Gender is a documentary that applies sociologist, Erving Goffman’s analysis of advertising to the media’s ability to shape normative ideas about masculinity and femininity. Sut Jhally is a narrator as he uses Goffman’s work to look beyond advertising as a simple way to sell products and focuses on identity and power relations created in mainstream ads.
Sex versus Gender
The film starts with a variety of movie clips showing actors and actresses asking characters, “so what are you?” or “are you a boy or a girl?”. This is a way of opening the discussion that when people are unable to identify with another person in terms of sex the unidentifiable person is then viewed as abnormal and the person who is unable to identify is then uncomfortable. This is seen clearly in situations of androgyny, where a person is partly male and female in appearance.
