Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…
In Ancient Mesopotamia the family relations and gender roles changed along with the culture. As the culture developed so did the family relations and gender roles. In the very beginning of the Mesopotamian culture, when the only people were hunter-gatherers, the gender did not matter terribly, as long as they could provide for the clan. As the hunter-gatherers evolved into farmers and specialized workers the women lost her role in society. Sexual inequality increased due to the specialization of jobs and division of jobs.…
. Many women internalized the culture of patriarchies, believing that it was their job to obey and serve men and accepted the fact that they were inferior to men. Patriarchal laws defined some rights for women even within marriage Civilizations began to develop and become more prosperous because of the agricultural jobs that men had. The jobs that men accomplished revolved around strength and power and the women while many civilizations were patriarchal, the advent of new religions sometimes allowed women to be treated equally of that society couldn’t perform those tasks. Much like today, gender roles in China, India and the Roman Empire are very different.…
The rights women have today, by far, surpass those given in ancient times. Hammurabi’s Code doesn’t give any specific rights to women, but rather if the husband doesn’t put any charges against them they are set free. This shows that the women were thought to be below men. For…

Before the death of Cleopatra, who is labeled as one of the most powerful feminist icons, women were looked at as equal to men in Egyptian civilization. They were in charge of taking care of the children, but they were also allowed to have small jobs, own a personal business, and study practically whatever they wanted (Khalil). When it came to religion, women could take the rolls of a scribe or a priestess, usually of a feminist “cult”. These cults are not what we consider cults today, instead they are another branch of a religion, such as Baptist, Lutheran, and more are a branch of Christianity. There are rumors that these women were so powerful they could predict the future and read dreams (Mark).…
Upon reading The Epic of Gilgamesh and Antigone by Sophocles were able to draw a connection in the way both of these pieces view women in society. Both pieces show, women were once seen as frail beings that should stay in their places and be brought out just to please men. Fortunately, we as a society have come far in terms of women being viewed as more equal to men than in the late B.C. times but that does not mean women are finished gaining the same rights that men have. During The Epic of Gilgamesh , we can see that the place of women in society is seen as less than men 's but not completely viewed as a nonentity in ancient Mesopotamia. The civilization sees women 's place as just the bearers of life: we see that with the prostitute…
Beginning in the Old Kingdom, women were seen as the subordinate of the two sexes during Ancient Egyptian Society. Moving through to the Middle and New Kingdoms, it is clear that their role in society was diminished heavily. This essay is primarily focussed on the roles of elite and non-elite females in Ancient Egyptian society, and how through time these roles changed – often for the worst. The increased importance placed on administrative titles that some elite women held during the Old Kingdom made them unobtainable for the less well educated females and literate men took over. Women’s role in the temple cult was reduced from priestess positions in the Old Kingdom to musicians in the Middle and New Kingdoms as males took over the role that now made up part of the state bureaucracy – something that women had no place in.…
