A topic that has throughout all of human history been extremely controversial is the idea of where we came from. Major religions of the world such as Islam and Christianity believe in the existence of a singular god whom created the Earth and all life on it. All religions have their own versions of how we came about, however science has been able to observe clues as to our origins. One famous scientist is Charles Darwin, who was the first to propose the theory of evolution; the idea that organisms will change over time to accustom to their changing environment. Darwin was met from the extremely religious world of the mid 1800’s with great hostility and ridicule. Now however, with modern science we are able to see that Darwin was onto something.

Although nothing is known how it occurred or what existed before hand, if anything at all, the Big Bang was a giant burst of expanding energy, which is still continuously expanding to this day. The Big Bang is estimated to have occurred roughly 13.7 billion year ago. The remains of energy emitted from the Big Bang were able to be observed in the 1960’s and this lead to the theory to become more widely accepted as it could actually be observed. The radiation was discovered by accident by radio astronomers who thought it was nothing but background noise.
The energy levels caused by the Big Bang were astronomical and it took 380,000 years for the universe to cool enough for atoms to be able to form. Before that the universe only contained primitive particles, and later only protons, neurons, electrons and neutrinos. One billion years after the Big Bang stars and galaxies began to form. This process occurs due to natural selection. Natural selection depends on the idea of survival of the fittest. Those organisms with the most desired and beneficial characteristics will survive and be able to reproduce, in comparison to organisms with less beneficial characteristics who will not survive in order to reproduce and whose genetic line will die out. This very simple process is what has allowed the thousands of different organisms present today to appear on our planet, all of whose characteristics play some sort of role in the insurance of their survival and reproduction. Darwin was able to study the finches on the different islands of the Galapagos Islands and noticed that they seemed to vary greatly when it came to features such as their beak size and shape. Through studying these finches he was able to observe how each of these different kinds of beaks were able to provide different functions when it came to what the finches were eating. Some proved more useful for eating insects, others seeds, others berries.
