In the late nineteenth, early twentieth centuries, Jews, Italians, Poles, and other immigrants were misrepresented by the left-wing anarchist terrorists, who were the major terrorist group of the time. In the 1930’s many Americans were opposed to letting German Jewish refugees in because a Nazi could slip in. During the Cold War, people were opposed to letting refugees from Cuba, Hungary, Vietnam, the USSR and other communist states because some might be communist agents. Jen Smyers of Church World Service, a refugee aid group said “In 1980 we airlifted more than 200,000 Vietnamese refugees, and they’re now very, much interwoven in the fabric of our communities”(Quinton). In all of these cases we let refugees in and although there were risks the benefits of letting refugees in greatly outweighed them. America would have been considerably worse off if, we had denied them entry into the Country. Refugees are just trying to flee the brutal oppression and terrorism of ISIS, which is the very force we are fighting ourselves. The alternative to admission to the US or other Western countries is life in refugee camps, they provide little freedom and horrendous, inhumane living conditions. In reality it would be strategic to aid in the resettlement of refugees because it is exactly what ISIS doesn’t want. The less people they rule over the weaker ISIS becomes, and ISIS supporters are substantially more likely to stay put and fight for their cause in the Middle East (Somin).
