The Beauty Of Sacrifice Chapter 9 Summary

Chapter nine is titled “The Beauty of Sacrifice”, as I read that I knew I was in for something close to the heart. Virgilio Elizondo how the people of poor masses prefer to see the Jesus of a worn down, beaten and suffering body. The reason for this is that the poor people see this as a reminder that God would no abandoned them in their suffering. Opposite of this, wealthy people prefer to see a Jesus with a perfect body, because they do not want to see a human disfigured. Elizondo believes that the best and purest wisdom came from Jesus for his ancient Aztec ancestors to form their interpretation of the death and suffering of Jesus. This is that Jesus lived, “a life entirely for the sake of others, even to the point of giving one’s life so that others might live” (pg. 100). The Mexican culture today holds a “salvific value and beauty of sacrifice” (pg. 100). Overall the sacrifice of blood and body for the world stands to be a solid remembrance of the full crucifixion of Jesus. The struggles of our life are no match for the events that we celebrate Good Friday for. On the cross, Jesus died, and God enters our cross to give us a life for dignity and freedom. Good Friday is their holiday, because they are not ashamed to be with God no matter how disgraced, disfigured, and rejected he is by our society. They go through this similar pain, and endure the rejection from society, which is wrong, but this gives them a more intimate celebration on Good Friday.
