Sacrifice is the ultimate key to obtaining true love. Love without sacrifice is like a poison that clouds the mind with hatred and selfishness. The Elite, written by Kiera Cass, is a wonderful novel that demonstrates the reality of facing complicated decisions and overcoming fears. In the beginning, America Singer is a seventeen-year-old girl who has the opportunity to marry the prince of Illéa, Maxon Schreave, and change her country forever; however, she refuses to sacrifice her prior relationships and lifestyle for the man she loves. As part of The Elite, the group of six girls competing to impress Prince Maxon and become the new queen, America must win Maxon’s heart to bring her family out of poverty and find her true love. On several occasions, America comes to realize how much Maxon has sacrificed his time and well being on her behalf. When the king becomes angry and threatens her, Maxon volunteers to be whipped by his father in her place. “A bleeding gash on [Maxon’s] shoulder tore down to his waist and crossed over another one that was also dripping blood . . .
