Agriculture and human sacrifice were major parts of the Aztec Empire’s history; from their amazing inventions for farming to how they worshiped their gods, this impacted how historians wrote Aztec history. Both influenced the empire equally and stood out as the unique factors of the Aztecs’ thriving civilization. Although the Aztecs had great advances toward agriculture, human sacrifice should be further emphasized, due to the many hidden facts to why and the intentions of the Aztecs to perform these horrid rituals.
Agriculture enhanced this empire by providing them resources, new creations, and a way to adapt to their surroundings, to help them live. According to a mural by mexican artist Diego Rivera, “The men plant and harvest the maize(corn) while the women grind and roll it into tortillas” (Doc C). This provides information on how the aztecs did their jobs to help the empire succeed. Stated in the Florentine codex, “This seasoned warrior, whom we changed from a human into the god Tezcatlipoca,the god of war” (Doc E). This line indicates how the Aztecs had great objectives to human sacrifices. It tells how they turned the warrior from human into god, therefore the warrior could be worshiped and live a good afterlife as a god. The text also shows, how a year before the body is sacrificed, it is treated as if it was the most royal family member(Doce E). This explains how they praised the body leading to the sacrifice, as it was a large role. Human sacrifice was important as a victim because it taught you to honor gods and was a part of religion which was required among all the
