Mayan Sacrifice Like The Aztecs

Decent Essays
The sacrifices were in all of the Mayan territories for a while. The supreme sacrifice was human life. They said the victims for the sacrifice would become Gods. This took place during elaborate ceremonies. Sacrificial scenes have been depicted Mayan ceramics, sculptures, and murals. Like the Aztecs, this was all done in an attempt to appease the Gods. They sacrificed animals, such as Crocodiles, Iguanas, Dogs, Peccaries, Jaguars, and Turkey.

An assignment was given to me that had me decide on whether historians should emphasize Sacrifice or Agriculture and I didn’t agree with the fact that I had to choose. Historians shouldn’t have to pick one topic, they should be able to emphasize on both equally, without one or the other the Aztecs wouldn’t be who they were, and we might not have known about them because what they did just wasn’t important enough. The Aztecs were a very large group of people and they needed a place to live, so they continued to conquer people and move onto an island. They conquered many lands by fighting in flower wars, and during these wars they captured their victims for the Sacrifice. The Aztecs were also very skilled in agriculture and had the genius idea…

In recent discussions of the Aztec Society , a controversial issue has been whether to highlight the Aztec’s achievements or human sacrifice. On the one hand, some argue that the Aztecs should be remembered for their achievements, as that is what fueled their society and allow them to build such a vast empire. On the other hand, however, others argue that human sacrifices are what built their empire, and what they should be remembered for. Many historians also argue that human sacrifice was a practice that was embedded in their daily lives and religious practices, a practice that made them unique and themselves.…

Many might not acknowledge how much of an impact food has made in shaping the society in which we live. Another unknown detail is that the use of farming is very recent to our knowledge. When the Spaniards first arrived in 1519, the Indigenous people of Mexico perceived and saw the strange men as powerful gods, or “deities”. Their king, Motecuhzoma, wanted to show his adoration for the new found gods by bringing them their finest gifts, and to the extent of his gratitude, he sacrificed his own men for them. However, the Spaniards saw their sacrifices as barbaric acts and mocked the gifts that were given to them.
