Teaching to Read

Have you ever tried to teach a four year old how to read and write? Where do you begin? How do you keep their attention? These are all things to consider when you are teaching someone how to read and write. These are things I had to consider two years ago when I was going to teach my little sister how to read and write. I was determined to help my parents and to give her a head start for her future, but I didn’t know how. I decided to just try my best to find things that work and things that don’t.

When I told my sister we were going to start going over how to read and write on monday. She got really excited and started jumping around screaming with excitement because she wanted to be able to do the things everyone else does. So monday comes around I got a very easy book and a dry erase board and a list of the alphabet and a bunch of games I got from my grandma who used to teach kindergarten. I set everything up on the table in our kitchen. I turned off the radio and the T.V. and opened the window so there was a nice breeze blowing in the house and we were able to hear all the animals outside. Everything seemed so relaxed and like the perfect place and time to learn something new. The first thing I have her do is go over the alphabet with me. I was surprised at how much she didn’t know and everything she still had to learn. I tried to teach her and she was getting frustrated then I started getting frustrated.
