“People don 't realize how a man 's whole life can be changed by one book” (Malcolm X). Books are beneficial in an individual’s vocabulary, memorization, and perspectives in life. In “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read” by David Raymond, Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez, and “My Alma Mater” from The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, all the authors struggled with something particular in literacy, but they all had different motives for improving their reading and writing. As seen in the three articles, each author had their own purpose in why literacy can be a good advantage and figured out different strategies to help ameliorate themselves. If you have obstacles which prevent you from reading or writing effectively, finding…

Douglass took to himself to seek methods to acquire the basic skill of writing and reading. One of the strategies Douglass deployed was that he gave poor children bread. In return, they bestowed Douglass knowledge regarding written communication. In contrast, I was given the opportunity to learn how to write by family members. For example, unlike Douglass; I was assisted with writing at a young age.…

In addition to intellectual curiosity, being well read is a quality that helped Douglass and Malcolm X become truly educated. Being well read helped both of them to learn vocabulary, spelling, and how to write. When Douglass knew how to read he came upon the word abolition. He didn’t know the meaning of the word so he read the dictionary, and a newspaper until he finally understood the meaning. He writes, “Every little while, I could hear something about abolitionists.…

Reading is something many people take for granted; in fact, it is sometimes a struggle to persuade people to read at all. In schools, there are typically a group of students that are “below-average” who have an “I don’t care” type of attitude towards learning and reading. This attitude causes them to receive poor grades in their classes and they make life strenuous on themselves. On the other spectrum are the areas where being able to read means you have great intelligence and great privilege. Reading and books aren’t as common and people aren’t gaining as much information as they could.…

I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…

Tiffany Malebranche Composition 1 Learning how to write was the hardest for me. Being able to trace the words correctly and having to take my time was the worst. I never had the patience and I was easily distracted by my classmates. Then as I grew older trying to voice my opinions and write paragraphs became my biggest enemy. Literacy is more than the ability to read and write; it's also the ability to understand what you're reading and make sense in what you're writing.…

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” A book always seemed to be in my hand when I was growing up, and whenever I got the chance, the pages were open, and I was immersed into whatever world the book allowed. I fell in love with everything about books. The pages, whether they were crisp and clean, or they were stained by coffee, and I knew they had been held and loved before me, could entertain me for hours as I flipped through them.…

According to UNESCO, an organization that is part of the United Nations, over ninety-nine percent of all adults in developed countries are literate. Because of how common it is literacy is a skill that many of us often take for granted. However literacy is special, especially to children who just learned how to read or write for the first time. Learning how to read can be one of the most exciting events in a child’s life.…
