In completing the course English 112 at Robeson Community College, I have found myself with a new found understanding how to write various genres, and do them well. Newly, I have experienced the handling of opinion writing, research writing, and direct analyzation writing. These concepts greatly helped me achieve the knowledge of love in writing. This class had an overall positive affect on the individual I now am, and created a way in which I read an assignment, sit down, and promptly beginning work. In this class, aspects such as research, analyzation, and procrastination hit the closest to who I was before enrolling and completing this course.…

Teddy Baker: The Big Defeat When I was younger I was a lanky boy in middle school, who could only dream of one day becoming an All-Star baseball player. The problem was, I could barely throw a pitch. I tried real hard to master it… trust me; I’m just not one for sports. This was the case ever since I was seven.…
Entering a Conversation While writing there is a lot of pressure to be able to create a perfect piece of writing. This tends to create an unreasonable type of pressure on the writer. Writers tend to overthink their work which leads to a block being created. When approaching writing many of use take different routes, but more often than not we stress ourselves out trying to create perfect drafts. In “The Inspired Writer Vs.…
Making Dreams Become Realities Just as the alarm clock rings and haults the tranquil dream of Yutan High School senior Allan Cramblitt, he leaps out of bed and gets ready to start his day. It’s 6:30 in the morning, and he quickly grabs a shower along with some breakfast before rushing to school. While this may seem to be a common way to start the day for any average high school student, Cramblitt is most definitely not average. From a young age, Cramblitt has had his mind set on what he wants to achieve in life: be valdictorian, go to an Ivy league school, and become a successful engineer.…
In John Steinbeck’s seminal novel Of Mice and Men, the nomadic farmworker George laments about finding work in the Great Depression, saying, “Guys like us…are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don 't belong no place…They ain 't got nothing to look ahead to.” This somber reflection of the era conveys the hopelessness that afflicted millions in this country. Even President Roosevelt, lauded as America’s savior, did little more than put a dent in unemployment numbers that soared above 25%.…
Here I sit, staring at the beaming light of my family's computer writing an essay at the nineteenth hour of the day. I’m not complaining after all It’s quite relaxing, with a bit of music as well as pure silence amidst the remainder of my parent’s residency. Considering myself a great writer is something I’ve never done, nonetheless I enjoy it. I have been a Texan all my life, having been to a few parts of the country it remains my favourite state. Austin, Texas is my birthplace I lived there for the first ten years of my life, six years ago we moved to San Antonio to enable visiting my outer family circle extra often.…
He needs to write in a new and inspiring way that the professors deem professional and worthy of being called a college level essay. These very students who have gotten A’s and B’s for turning papers in that are virtually free of grammar issues and original thought or ideas. The writer is walking into a field of land minds. Bartholomae theorizes that the incoming students have not been prepared in the least bit for college style writing. Students in the past have been taught to write in order to pass a test, not to write in order to impress or evoke a mental breakthrough.…
It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…
A young freshman in college is anxiously checking her schedule for her first semester. She examines her paper carefully and sees she is taking English 112. Stephen King, in his piece “What Writing Is”, claims that “it’s writing, damn it, not washing the car or putting on eyeliner. If you can take it seriously, we can do business”. Not only is writing an intellectual and reflective activity, it is a vital skill in all fields of work and academia, and can be learned through abundant reading and practice. Effective and engaging writing can bring about change. Claim:…
How We Spend Our Lives “When you write, you lay out a line of words. The line of words is a miner’s pick, a woodcarver’s gouge, a surgeon’s probe. You wield it, and it digs a path you follow. Soon you find yourself deep in new territory.” (qtd.…
In his essay “Thought,” Louis H. Sullivan greatly stresses the importance of thinking critically and creatively, and presents the argument that one must think not in words but rather in images, rhythm, and other wordless forms of communication. Sullivan resorts heavily on comparisons and analogies and metaphors to convey the impractical usage of words. “But in passing I may say that real thinking is better done without words than with them, and creative thinking must be done without words,” Sullivan argues, and he goes on to explain the intellectual heft and rigor of thinking creatively and highlights its rewards. Sullivan also asserts that one must think in the present and the present alone, for his reasoning is that “you cannot in the past,…
Coffey. Until the time of my senior English, the teachers I had before Coffey was not as zealous and exciting about writing like her. I believe that Coffey’s attitude about writing assignments we had to do was the reason why I fell back in love with writing. Unlike any other teacher, Coffey put all assignments into perspective and how the topic mattered to our lives. This technique of teaching or mindset changed why I wrote.…
