Strengths Of Small Groups

Improved Essays
A small group is comprised of a diverse group of people, each bringing to the table their own unique set of experiences. However, these very experiences can be barriers to communication and hinder collaboration. Nevertheless, small groups are an integral part of life and learning how to work more effectively in them can enrich one’s academic and professional accomplishments. In this paper I will define the term “small group” and assess my current skill level working in them. Additionally, I will outline my small group experiences and the strengths and weaknesses I bring to them. Lastly, I will determine the knowledge and skills needed in order for me to work more effectively in small groups. In evaluating my current skill level in working with small groups I must confess that it is rather sparse. Previously, I was working for a financial services and communication company that occasionally required small group collaborations. However, the bulk of my experience in working in small groups involved class projects. Beyond school, the only small group which I am involved in are primary groups, comprised of family and friends, and while I come from a large family, my friends are few. …show more content…
The strengths that I bring to a group are efficiency, meticulousness, approachability, and reliability. I am a good listener, and my mellow and soft spoken personality makes others feel comfortable talking to me. However, one of my biggest weakness is that I am an introvert. I don’t socialize often and my social network is limited to family, a few close and intimate friends, as it generally takes time for me to form relationships. Typically, I am not a conversation-starter, especially with unfamiliar people. This in itself can be somewhat problematic because my silence can be seen as being rude and

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

Constance Contact is a program that enables users to edit flyers and is also used to distribute emails to Glendale Chamber of Commerce members. I often used Constant Contact to edit flyers such as At-A-Glance that contained Glendale Chamber member information, which was considered a tool that could market their products. Databases is a website that the Glendale Chamber of Commerce utilizes to catalog all the customer’s personal information for the company. As for Facebook, I used the social media website to post Glendale Chamber members advertisements.…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

As a collaborator, my strengths were that I made sure that everything got done on time and that it was done right. My weaknesses were that I didn’t really talk to my group as much as I should have and I kind of didn’t put responsibility on anyone but myself. Group work requires talking to others, otherwise you’ll just pull all of the weight and the other group members will get a free ride. Honestly, I feel comfortable controlling the whole process of group work and have people just follow what I say so I know that things are getting done right. This is probably not good, but I don’t feel like I can trust groups because a lot of the time people don’t do what they’re supposed to.…

Finally, the model consists of 5 stages ;forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Part 2: Theory into practice Reflect upon your experience of working in a small group during the DEO module. The two weaknesses that I am fully aware of and take steps to work on every day are my communication with others, I tend to be shy at first, and asking for help. I have come a very long way in my life with how shy I am. When I was in kindergarten I would not even answer a question in class, when called on I would lean over to my only friend in the class and whisper the answer so she would answer for me. I have worked very hard to overcome this, I am nowhere near as shy, but I find myself reverting back slightly sometimes when in new situations. I am able to talk to strangers and patients that I just met like I have known them all my life, but when it comes to people I know I will be spending quite a bit of time with I tend to be quiet for a while until getting to know them very well.…

In small groups there is a focus on “thinking” instead of just “getting an answer” (Cooke & Adams, 1998). “If student’s have to defend their solution to others in small groups…they will develop a better understanding of the mathematics and more confidence in their own ability to solve difficult problems” (1998). Part of the skill students are developing is their ability to convince another student that their ideas are valid (1998). Modeling and showing students what they should look and sound like when working in small groups is important. To help them with focusing, let students know what they should be saying when they are talking in their group, “I should hear words like equal, not equal.”…
