Standardized Patient Reflection

Improved Essays
During the second week of class, one of my fellow classmates and I were provided the opportunity to engage with standardized patients (SPs), provide care, and develop our caring techniques (Bornais, J., El-Masri, M., Krahn, R. & Raiger, J., 2012). The scenario provided for this week involved Brandon Sharp, a gentleman who suffers from a spinal cord injury. When providing care for Brandon, my partner and I began by completing a focused assessment on his nervous system and moved onto bathing the SP, changing the soiled bedding, and completing a head-to-toe assessment, which we forgot to complete alongside the focused assessment. We then finished this provision of care by feeding Brandon applesauce & juice and moving him to his wheelchair via …show more content…
I felt this experience was able to reinforce what has been learned and further develop previously gained caring skills. This experience also allowed me to draw on previous SP scenarios and knowledge, apply the positive aspects gained, and improve upon negatives. Moreover, what I had learnt in class the week of this scenario developed during this scenario as my partner and I had to alter our practice from what we were taught. While completing the SP’s bead bath and cleansing his abdomen, my partner and I had to changed our cleansing technique as he had a sensitive four-inch scar above his left nipple that he did not want us to directly cleanse. As my goal for this provision of care was to allow Brandon to feel comfortable, empowered, and safe throughout the entire care process, I responded and took action with this issue by drawing upon the knowledge gained in my other SP experience. I first asked for Brandon’s permission to cleanse the area around the scar and when he gave consent, I began wiping slowly around the perimeter and surrounding area of the scar while ensuring the patient was not in too much discomfort and I was providing a effective

On November 17, 2015, I was able to attend the IPE Campus Activity held in the old gym. This event consists of all health professional students attending Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. I believe there were close to 500 students that attended the IPE event. The students were separated into teams of various health professions. The group I was part of consisted of three pharmacists, a respiratory care therapist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, two nurses, the facilitator (who is a physical therapist as well), and myself with a public health profession.…

The best interpretation of a dental hygienist that I can conceive is a professional whose main job is to teach their clients the essential oral hygiene skills and provide dental care in order for the client to maintain their overall oral health. Among the various responsibilities performed for the client to insure their health and safety includes making sure, we, as dental hygienists first do not harm to the patient by contaminating with pathogens that could have easily been disposed of by simply following the standard rules of infection control. As stated by Ester Wilkins “Dental healthcare personnel have a professional obligation to serve all patients with comprehensive oral care, including patients with known or unknown communicable diseases.…

According to the official National Honor Society website, NHS serves to “not only recognize students for their accomplishments, but challenge them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.” The paragraph goes on to describe how the students in NHS ideally strive to achieve “excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.” As an individual hoping to become a member of the society, I interpret this to mean that when one enters NHS, they are not granted the freedom to then be lazy with their grades or lax with their leadership simply because they were deemed suitable for the society at one point. Rather, as a member of the National Honor Society, one becomes a leader on campus and a model of character, while continuing to offer constructivity and inspiration to their community and peers.…

Purpose: Breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP) lacks for standards for diagnosis, assessment and management. This study is aimed at reaching consensus on the application of criteria to diagnosis and on the appropriate use of rapid-onset fentanyl formulations (ROOs). Methods: A Spanish group of medical oncology experts was invited to participate in a consensus process thorough a modified 2-round internet-based Delphi survey. Panellists were asked to rate agreement with each statement using a 9-point Likert scale, and median consensus scores (MED) and interquartile ranges (IQR) were calculated to measure expert consensus after both rounds: agreement on a statement was defined as a MED score ≥7 (consensus with the statement) and an IQR <3…

Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…

Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…
