Therapist Reflection

Improved Essays
Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”. This shows how important evaluations are for growth in your career. From my experience, I have enjoyed the receiving evaluations from professors and supervisors. It has helped me tremendously improve in my training. In …show more content…
I think there are still areas, I would like to improve in. specifically, learning to co-facilitate with my supervisor, learning to engage the client on a more deeper level, and implementing different techniques in therapy. The first one is important because, sometimes I find myself in-group nervous to say something or not knowing what to say. I have had talks about this in-group supervision, and I understand that co-facilitating is an art and it takes time to master. I am looking forward to growing more in this area, so I can feel more confident in having great sessions with my clients and my supervisor. The next area of improvement would be to lean from my supervisor ways to allow the client to dig deeper with different phrases and techniques. I think after observing her, I think she has the best way to phrase certain questions, which I would like to improve on. The last are of improvement is to be comfortable implementing other techniques from other modalities. Primarily we focus on DBT, however some of y clients are not as receptive to DBT, so I would love to gain more experience in using other modalities for these clients. I think I will always have areas I want to improve in, but I think these are the basic areas that will help me feel confident in my efficacy as a beginning

Clinical Reflection: Group Meeting I arrived thirty minutes earlier for the meeting scheduled at seven that evening, but the parking lot was almost full and teeming with activity. There were people talking, laughing, and some were loitering, wandering aimlessly before proceeding through a discreet door; ten minutes prior to the scheduled start. Hence, the scene reminded me more of an enthusiastic crowd being ushered in before the movie start or an eager bunch queueing up for the latest iPhone rather than a weary horde, about to face intervention. That was not what I had envisioned this discussion to be, much less, what I had expected. Moreover, behind those inconspicuous door, only made distinguishable by a small double A sign, was a…

Since researching this topic, my nursing practice has changed in the way that I interview, assess, and treat my clients. Throughout my education in nursing school I was always taught a more holistic approach, however I was never truly conducting my assessments and interviews with clients within this matter. I am always respectable and caring towards clients, but in my past practices within clinical, my focus was primarily on the disease process and preventing the disease from worsening. Within this semester I have improved my practice, with the help of this research, to not only treat the disease process, but to use the same focus as CAM and treat the person as a whole. I found this to also help in establishing better client-caregiver relationships.…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

I have learned a lot about myself while completing the self-assessment questionnaires, and taking the time to self-reflection about my learning style and therapeutic mode. Continuous Feedback

Communication and feedback during the performance appraisal should be much easier if an organization has already implemented the previously discussed ongoing developmental feedback. This will ensure that, when it comes time for the performance appraisal, there will be no surprises and the conversation can be much more productive. There is also a higher likelihood that an effective two-way conversation will take place due to an existing employee-manager relationship built around performance feedback. In support of these assertions, a study by Kuvaas (2011) emphasized the importance of continuous feedback and its implications on the performance appraisal process. The author showed that “there was a positive relationship between perceived helpfulness of performance appraisal and work performance only for employees who perceived that they received high levels of regular feedback” (p. 131).…

These therapy sessions provided the needed feedback from the instructor and my peers to gain a better understanding my theoretical orientations and areas in which I can work on to become a more competent therapist. The coursework that was provided through this course also assisted in having a better knowledge base for my future practice based on empirically…

While managing to present the client with certain challenges that allow them to see the action that needs to be taken, and what can they do in order to bring about change. It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…
