United Airlines is no stranger to tragedies, bad public relations, and unfortunate unethical events. United-related incidents have been due to pilot error, mismanaged employees, poor technology, and/or their profit-first company structure. United’s past performance indicates a critical need to reevaluate their stakeholder relationships and reshape their brand image.
United Airlines is the largest air-carrier in the world (in regards to number of destinations), with service to 375 destinations in over 50 countries, and nearly 150 million passengers each year (Smith, DMR, and Holmes, Business Insider). One primary weakness they encounter is weather, which leads to delayed flights and in turn, leads to issues with overbooking. Although the weather may be out of their control, it is apparent that they lack a functional system to circumvent this issue. “Severe weather that pounded Atlanta in the middle of spring break caused a five-day meltdown across United’s flight network” (Ostrower). United should be better prepared for upcoming weather and limit booking accordingly. Their own crew members were left waiting for instructions instead of being prepared with a procedure to accommodate passengers. This uncertainty can cause unease among workers which likely advances to agitating customers with poor treatment. Another clear planning issue is their poor IT infrastructure and lack of backup systems. In January 2017, “Computer outage caused big delays and the cancellation of about 300 flights.” (Mclean). IT systems are always susceptible to failure and must be prepared for. The system was down for 6 hours in total. A backup server and database should be set up to fill in for any outages just like any company would store generators in case of power
