Saint Vincent Hospital Strives for Organizational Culture
Saint Vincent Hospital, a part of the Allegheny Health Network, is an acute care hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania. Throughout the hallways of our facilities is the essence of our mission, values, and core behaviors. The core behaviors are critical to our cultural organization and based on four pillars. The four pillars consist of placing our customer’s first, transformational leadership, trust (working together), and purposeful execution (Core Behaviors: Critical to the execution of our strategy, 2017). The mission statement is built on eight core values: two of which are people matter and stewardship. People matter, every person contributes to our success. We strive for an inclusive culture, regarding people as professionals and respecting individual differences while focusing on the collective whole. Stewardship, working to improve the health of communities we serve and wisely managing the assets which have been trusted to our care (Highmark Health Mission, Vision & Values.,n.d.). As a nurse on the frontline, I have witnessed nurses of all levels of experience working together on shared governance committees to drive outcomes with regards to nurse sensitive indicators. In order for nursing “to ensure favorable nursing sensitive outcomes it is essential that there is a shared interest in the unit to invest in the creation of a supportive practice environment” (Hahtela, Paavilainen, McCormack, Slater, Helminen, & Suominen, 2015). Nurse driven protocols have been developed and implemented providing opportunity for better patient outcomes. As an organization we are very close to eliminating our 1% Hospital Acquired Conditions penalty because we are working together to improve how we deliver care.
