St George Day Fair

"It's every man for himself", a quote that I more or less went by. Truth be told, I wasn't always one to care about the wellbeing of the community. My wellbeing was my main focus. The thoughtof doing volunteer service never crossed my mind, until it became mandatory, in order to be inducted in the National Honor Society. After participating in a few projects and events, from what seemed to be a tedious activity turned out to be a rewarding experience. I realized that I can still care about my wellbeing, while thinking about that of the people in my community. Through volunteer service, I contribute to bringing my community together and making it a better place to live. A particularly fond community service that I performed was assisting at the St George Day Fair. An annual event, the St George Day Fair embraces the St George area by providing numerous activities and performances for local residents. My job in particular was to teach children how to draw a dragon, since dragons were the main theme of the St George Day Fair. Since …show more content…
I live in Staten Island, and this borough can be considered more infamous than the other boroughs. Having the most substance abusers and crime rate, Staten Island has often been looked down upon. The St George Day fair really showed that there's more to Staten Island than drug users and crime. Seeing the smiling faces of local residents of various backgrounds was a wonderful experience. Although the table I worked at was small, I met a large variety of children. This one child I worked with, Jaime, had down syndrome and had quite the passion for the arts. Jaime was probably the most excited child that I worked with during the event. Another child, Aaron, loved to talk. Aaron told such colorful stories while at the table; stories ranging from the time he dropped his dad's car keys in the toilet to the time he saw a squirrel

Service to others has played a big part of my high school career. I am an instructor for a middle school indoor winterline group and I am specifically in charge of the colorguard members and their work. When I am with the group, I help instruct and show these young students the correct way to do dance, colorguard, and performance. By teaching them, it has lead me to develop my own skills, like communication, leadership, and my own dance and colorguard skills. Also, another reason service is important in my life is because of the relationships I gain.…

For as long as I can remember, my family has taught me that you are supposed to do good things, not looking for any reward. I have maintained this motto throughout my life. This shows true as my accredited service hours equate to almost 1000, just in these 3 short years of high school. I volunteer for the Hilton Raiders to be their teen coach, help in Make a Difference Day, and have participated in multiple walks to raise awareness for a numerous amount of causes. I feel that it is my responsibility as a functioning citizen, to participate in making our community a better…

A time in my life that has abundantly affected the way I see myself, community and world is when I volunteered at a soup kitchen or a program known as 'Bread of Life'. Helping people made me realize that it's a good intention. Volunteering makes you feel proud of yourself. When I was volunteering I made food, helped out in the kitchen and helped clean. Knowing that people who needed food was getting the nutrients and the people were getting fed made me see that helping out can be a huge impact.…

In the world we live in now it is very easy to overlook the importance of community. It not only gives a sense of belonging, but also forms a support group for individuals that fall on hard times. Volunteering through the Michigan State University Student Literacy Corps, demonstrated to me the need for community support in a child’s education. This organization tutors k-5 children in reading and writing, free of charge. Entering in this program I was told that the capital area is among the poorest regions in the state, and has an adult literacy rate of below 75%.…

For my service learning, I have been volunteering at a place called Cook Library. Cook Library serves mainly as a library but also has a large after-school-program for kids in the neighborhood and also is a community center where many other organizations utilize their space. The role I play at Cook Library is one of a tutor. I help out with the after-school-program by helping the kids who come with their homework, reading, and supervising any other activities that take place. Cook Library is located in a heavily Hispanic populated neighborhood so almost all of the kids who come to the after-school-program are Hispanic.…

Volunteering has made me realize that this really is an important and urgent question you should ask yourself, because volunteering is good for you as well as those that you assist. For instance, it was an extraordinarily good feeling for me to volunteer at the Unionville Community Bike Drive. Over a series of months we collect, clean, repair, deliver, and then distribute around 100 bikes to those in need in the community. Being part of a diverse team of people whose main goal is to have a positive impact on the community was energizing. Watching the look of happiness and relief on hundreds of people in need was priceless.…

“Physically, volunteering helps keep them active, but even more importantly, volunteering takes their mind off of their own problems and helping other people just makes them feel better.” (“Doing Good is Good for You: 2013 Health and Volunteering Study”). There are a multitude of ways to serve, but when a person chooses to do so, they are ensuring that they will be an active member of their community. People centered on a life full of service are the people who are often out of the house and aware of their surroundings so that when opportunities for service arise, they are prepared and ready to help. An active life focused on service ensures a healthier, longer, and happier…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

    Essay On Service Learning

Service-Learning Essay There are many small ways one can serve their community. Even if all a person does is volunteer at an event, one could still be inspired to begin an organization or simply raise awareness of an issue that they believe needs to be resolved. Recently while volunteering at an event I regularly volunteer at, I took notice of an issue concerning the deaf community that had recently been made aware to me prior to that night. My two-hour volunteer service – one that does not seem to highly impact the community - had brought to light an issue that I may be able to help resolve, and could one day greatly impact our community.…
