Throughout my high school years I have learned that being an active member of my community is just as important as good grades and school spirit. Volunteering and working has made me an agent of change by being part of the “bigger picture” in the world, trying to make life a little better in my community. It has also magnified my education and helped define me as a person. I believe my strong work ethic in my studies and staying active in the world around me has created strong building blocks for my future success in my college life and beyond.

Martin Luther King Junior once stated, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” Volunteering has made me realize that this really is an important and urgent question you should ask yourself, because volunteering is good for you as well as those that you assist. Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Freshman year I started volunteering at Suncoast hospice; mainly because of the fact that I needed to build up my pre-med resume with healthcare experience but also because it was the only local health care related volunteer activity and transportation was an issue. Little did I know that taking on a challenge that would have such an impacting effect on my character and how I interpret the world. Through various activities ranging from baking cookies, making hand sewn comfort bears, to delivering groceries, and folding over 500 “thinking about you cards”; I have come to the realization that the ripple effect does not have any limitations, no matter how big or small one’s actions. Completing over 100 hours with hospice is an accomplishment…

People volunteer for many different reasons; it could be because they are required to volunteer, to gain new experiences, or to explore career options. I volunteer because I love making connections with other people, and helping others. Volunteering gives me a sense of accomplishment and allows me to know that I have done well for others. This past summer I had the privilege of volunteering at the Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences annual conference, as well as Brookdale Assisted Living in Manassas. Volunteering at these places taught me many important life lessons, allowed me to make connections with other people, and allowed myself to grow as an individual.…

Response to #2 Hi Rana, I like how you mention that volunteering can aid those in developing countries. Volunteering is great way to be useful and make a difference however is not always easy. Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
