Two Way Exchange

The sun rises every day. This is not debatable. Each and every day as the sun rises, it enriches the earth in numerous ways. A corresponding paradigm occurs when individuals perform service. People who are continually in the service of others recognize that they are improving the lives of others; however, they also often recognize that the service they perform is not only benefitting those they serve. Unlike the one-way benefit exchange between the sun and earth, service is a two-way exchange. A regular volunteer in West Virginia, Charlie Houck, recognized a portion of this phenomenon. He shared, “My brain got involved first, because it was the right thing to do, then my heart took over...I really feel like in this small community...I can actually make a difference, I can help improve things”(Harris). What Houck was not able to see was how wide of an influence he can have when it comes to helping improve things. People engaged in service not only improve the lives of those around them, they also improve their own life. Individual health, both emotional and physical, improves after actively engaging in service.

“Physically, volunteering helps keep them active, but even more importantly, volunteering takes their mind off of their own problems and helping other people just makes them feel better.” (“Doing Good is Good for You: 2013 Health and Volunteering Study”). There are a multitude of ways to serve, but when a person chooses to do so, they are ensuring that they will be an active member of their community. People centered on a life full of service are the people who are often out of the house and aware of their surroundings so that when opportunities for service arise, they are prepared and ready to help. An active life focused on service ensures a healthier, longer, and happier

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…

Experiences like this have opened my eyes to the lives of others and the importances of being a kind and gracious person that is willing to provide joy to others. Often times when we hear the word ‘service’ we think of doing something for someone other than yourself. In that moment of kindness, you may not think that your small gesture or the work you are doing for someone could have an impact on someone’s life or even the world. Throughout the text, The Work by Wes Moore, the idea of work has a much bigger meaning that states having a life that matters is important. He believes that living a life full of meaning, purpose, and service are the keys that allow you to become part of a bigger picture.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
