I used to believe that volunteering was just for people who were forced into it. In the beginning I went in with that mentality, but as I continued going week after week, I learned that people sometimes went just to volunteer. They volunteer, not because they need the hours, but because they enjoy working for the community. Through volunteering, those people created relationships with other people volunteering, and for them it did not seem like it was volunteer work at all. I noticed that when I would go in to volunteer, people would start talking with each other naturally as if they had known each other for years. One of the most important lessons I learned through volunteering is that volunteering can either seem like work, or you could make the experience better by engaging with others who are doing the same thing for the community. There were days when there was not much to do and I was assigned to clean the warehouse or making bags for produce. As much as it annoyed me that I was not doing more, small contributions such as those add up in a larger scale. I learned to turn my disappointment into a positive thing by changing the way I thought about the tasks I did. For example, a clean warehouse allows packing and distribution to run more efficiently and making bags would eventually be filled with produce for people all over Southern Nevada. Sometimes it felt like I was not doing anything impactful, but when everything is added up, I did have some impact on my community.
One of the best things I learned about the organization I volunteered for was the passion that people who worked there had. They were extremely friendly and you could see the enthusiasm they felt about the work they were doing. The buildings had a welcoming atmosphere that made not feel intimidated. That made it easier for me to continue to volunteer every week. Towards the end of the experience, I felt like I was actually a part of the organization and not just a
