I was thinking about what I can write about that I can relate to and is going to be interesting to the people that will read my essay. I want to write about spina bifida because it is a disease I had to deal with when I had my first child at 14 years old. My child had spina bifida and did not make it through birth because of the stress the disease cause on both me and him while he was in the placenta. I don’t think a lot of people know about this disease and the cause and affects of it and after researching about it I too learned a lot about it. I hope I can give a little information about spina bifida and it helps someone that is going through the same experience I did. Spina bifida is a neural tube defect(a disorder involving incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord, and their protective coverings) caused by the failure of the fetus’s spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. Infants born with spina bifida sometimes have an open lesion on their spine where significant damage to the nerves and spinal cord has occurred. Although the spinal opening can be surgically repaired shortly after birth, the nerve damage is permanent, resulting in varying degrees of paralysis of the lower limbs.
