The Spanking Controversy Four out of five Americans believe it is “sometimes appropriate” to spank a child (Horton). Does painful punishment build a better person? Over the years, there has been a lot of back and forth controversy over whether or not it is an acceptable form of punishment for parents to spank their children. This subject is interesting because I have a 3 year old son who is wild and crazy, and sometimes does not do as he is told. I am also interested in seeing what both sides of this debate have to say, and how they back up the reasoning for their arguments. So the question remains, should parents be allowed to spank their children or should spanking be considered child abuse? The audience involved in this issue would include some of the following type of people and entities: Child Protective Services (CPS), Legislators who make the laws, and more importantly parents who have children and people who want or plan to have children. These are the active people …show more content…
Each professional is from a different profession and have very different views on the topic. On the side for spanking is a pediatrician, Dr. David Safir, who is a father and grandfather of five. Dr. Safir said “he was spanked as a child, spanked his own children when necessary and believes the occasional use of physical punishment -- not abuse -- can be an effective tool for parents” (Zeidler). On the side against spanking is Dr. Barbara Greenberg, a psychologist who specializes in parenting, teens, and family. She believes that "Physical punishment instills a feeling of shame," and goes on to say that, "Shame also leads to depression and anxiety” (Zeidler). I believe that this article is helpful due to what the doctors specialize in. It is interesting that a head doctor and a health doctor have two completely different opinions on the

Spanking has been an effective way for parents to reprimand their children if they misbehave or act inappropriately. Until recently, spanking has been a culturally acceptable form of punishment for children between the ages of one to five. In fact, 65% of 3-year-old children had been spanked within the last month (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2017). However, many disagree with the idea of spanking their children, due to the fact that it may cause more aggressive behavior. Instead of spanking, people have turned to a warmth parenting style which includes “affection, comfort, concern, nurturance, support, and good old fashioned love (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2018) .”…

Now I believe a child needs a spanking every once in awhile when they act a fuss, if you let kids run the household with empty threats, and soft punishments, they learn no respect, and I believe sets them up for a life filled with let downs, and false entitlements that may lead them to a life on the street. Narrtio Clearly, the majority of parents say they spank their kids. Certain factors increase the likelihood of spanking, like geographic location (children in the South are spanked the most), family income (less money means more spanking), race (African-American mothers spank their children more than other ethnic groups) and religion (parents with more fundamentalist in their religious beliefs spank more than those who are less so). Also most people don't agree on what spanking actually is.…

I agree, in my opinion spanking your child can be an effective way to administer punishment especially if the child is caught in the act of doing something wrong; but I think that if you were to spank the child a while after he or she has already done something wrong it would not be as effective as being caught in the act. As a child, I can remember when my parents would give me a spanking for something I did wrong and most of the time if they caught me in the act and punished me right then and there it stuck better in my head. For example, when I was around 9 years old my dad taught me how to hunt for doves every season we would hunt doves and shoot them.…

Debate on How to Punish a Child Have your parents ever spanked you as a child when you were misbehaving? Did your parents negotiate with you instead of spanking you? I can remember a few times where my parents spanked me when I misbehaved. Absolutely not! There is a difference between the abuse and discipline. Often parents try hard to raise a well mannered and a well disciplined child. Parents have to be cautious when disciplining their children to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, there is not a set behavior that warrants a spanking. Some sources say that it is okay to spank because it aids in building a strong relationship of respect with the parent and child, and it results in well-mannered children and adults. Parents also say that it is normal to spank children and that it is just disciplinary actions (“The Spanking Debate” 1).…

“Abusing a vulnerable child is always, and extremely, damaging and wrong.” Therefore, spanking is not the answer to disciplining the child. A child does not have a say to what the parent can or cannot do to them. A parent should seek other options other than spanking their child. Some parents believe that spanking is the fastest way to procure to their child, although the fact is they are just making their children scared of their parents.…

Spanking, for this purpose, should not be confused with child abuse. Spanking can be defined as “a type of corporal punishment, which refers to striking a child with an open hand on the buttocks or extremities with the intention of modifying behavior without causing physical injury” (qtd. Saadeh 87). Although greatly debated on ethicality, spanking has been a form of discipline forever, it can be an efficient way to discipline a child and should not be considered abuse, because at times…

The sociologic topic that interests me is the impact of spanking, or corporal punishment, on children. On social media, I continually see people posting a meme that says “My parents spanked me as a child - as a result I now suffer from a psychological condition known as “Respect for Others”.” The meme is usually shared and followed by comments about how true the statement is and how “kids these days” need more spankings. This interests me because I personally think that we cannot predict how a child will react to this type of punishment and that the consequences of this type of punishment vary from child to child. I would like to find the actual consequences of spanking and if I am able to find any evidence that supports spanking as an effective…

Marks should never be left on a child, and the spanking should never exceed the crime. There are other ways of discipline i.e. grounding, cleaning, etc. Personally, I think spanking a child for bad behavior or disrespect is allowed, but in a responsible adult manner. There are a lot of instances where parents are excessive and get carried away, leading into a child abused household. Not saying spanking is the gateway to this issue, since stress on the parents usually cause…
