Have your parents ever spanked you as a child when you were misbehaving? Did your parents negotiate with you instead of spanking you? I can remember a few times where my parents spanked me when I misbehaved. I always thought that the way my parents would punish my sister and I was a normal thing that would happen when a child was disobedient. It turns out that there are parents who oppose using corporal punishment (spanking) on children as they find that it is wrong. Dr. Baumrind is a psychologist at the University of California at Berkeley.(379) He explains what this study was about, following 164 middle-class families, so that his audience are not confused as to what this study is on. He then provides his audience with her findings. Dr. Baumrind found that a mild spanking does not leave a child scarred for life and that child who parents used severe punishments are likely to be maladjusted. He gives his audience proof to support his view that spanking is not bad for children and can prevent them from becoming brats. However, Leonard’s viewpoint on the matter of discipline leaves out that there are children who receive punishment yet they still turn out to be brats. Just because a child receives a spanking doesn’t mean that it will keep that child from turning into a brat. Punishment is to keep the child from doing what they did again. Punishment serves as a reminder that if you do something wrong there will be consequence. I personally know children that their parents do spank them when they have done something wrong yet these children are still brats. The punishment has nothing to do with
