Clearly, the majority of parents say they spank their kids. Certain factors increase the likelihood of spanking, like geographic location (children in the South are spanked the most), family income (less money means more spanking), race (African-American mothers spank their children more than other ethnic groups) and religion (parents with more fundamentalist in their religious beliefs spank more than those who are less so). Spanking shows that “stronger” is right. When you use physical punishment to show a child that they did something wrong, you are sending the unintended effect of a message that whomever is bigger and stronger decides what’s right. Does this mean your child can control what’s right when he or she becomes stronger than you? Spanking demonstrates that older people have a right to hit younger people, sending the message that older, bigger people have the right to smaller people.
