Back in high school, I decided that I wanted to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology out of my desire to understand the different aspects of human functioning and the factors that influence it. As I navigated through college, I could not ignore the fact that something else sparked my interest even more than psychology, and that is social injustice. Through courses such as United States History and African American Studies, I found myself in a constant state of anger and frustration aimed at the deeply rooted social injustices that still plague our society today. I could not ignore the lingering irritation that I felt every time I heard stories of or even witnessed someone be denied access to basic civil liberties and human rights due to race, gender, social class or any other factor. In particular, I am interested in racial injustice, systematic inequality, poverty, drug addictions, and threats to human rights in general. Through my interactions with students as a psychology tutor and with my clients as a life coach, I find that I have been able to connect with any individual regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. This is a very important quality for a social worker to have, especially since I plan to work with vulnerable populations. I have a minor in social welfare which provides me with the basic foundational knowledge that I need to succeed in the courses that you offer in your social work program. In addition to my minor courses, other courses that will enable me to succeed in your program include social psychology, theories of counseling, multicultural issues and ethics, research methods, and statistics.
