19 April 2016 The Faria Murder Trial On December 27th, 2011, a very strange occurrence took place in the home of Russell and Elizabeth (Betsy) Faria. At approximately 9:40 pm, the Lincoln County Police Department received a phone call from Russell. He claimed that he had just arrived at home and believed that Betsy had committed suicide. He told police that she was lying lifeless on the floor of their house when he found her. When the police arrived to the house at which they believed to be a suicide case, they realized it was much more than that. It was a Tuesday night, “Game Night”, and they all had been catching up after the holidays. Russell claims to have no part whatsoever in the killing of his wife. On that same night, however, Betsy had apparently been with one of her best friends, Pam Hupp. Four days before Betsy was killed, she attempted to change the joint insurance policies out of her and Russell’s name and into Hupp’s name. “Attorneys for Betsy's daughters Leah and Mariah said Hupp repeatedly told police that Betsy signed over her policy to make sure her daughters were taken care of, since she was dying of cancer” (Hayes). It is believed that the entire murder revolves around this one action of Betsy, but when looking into further detail it seems as though there may be more to the story. “...changing her life insurance policies and making sure she had gotten them out of her husband's name. She had already changed one of the policies and had inadvertently left the other policy at home on the counter. She needed to go back there [the house] and get the policy to get it in the mail and she wanted to be sure that she got everything out of his name because he would “waste” the money away once she was gone” (Askey). Betsy knew that her husband would spend the money in whatever way suited him best. She believed that switching the policyholder would help to avoid this issue because then her daughters would get the money they deserved. When the night of the incident took place, many of the details told by others seem to be mistaken or told in completely different ways. Russell and Betsy had not been at the same place on said “Game Night”. According to an interview with Hupp, she dropped Betsy off at the house at approximately 7:25 pm and they had both gone inside the house for roughly 20 minutes before Hupp left and headed home.
