Watch out heroin and morphine there is a new drug rising to the top. America has developed a new addiction to a particular opioid painkiller, fentanyl. Fentanyl, which has been around since the 1960s, is a one of the most potent painkiller that is prescribed to cancer patients. Fentanyl is 100 times more potent that morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. The drug’s potency works soothing the pain in cancer patients. However, lately, the drug has been used for a different and more fatal purpose. A new version of fentanyl has been created and is being sold on streets all over America. Recently ten people died n twelve days from fentanyl- laced pills. One of those ten people was Jerome Butler. Jerome got the fentanyl-laced pills from an acquaintance of his. The thing that is most shocking in this case was that Jerome Butler did not know that the pills he was given were laced with the potent drug. Butler was told that the drug was a less potent painkiller, Norco. Butler’s mother claims that he was murdered. Since there was a sudden spike of deaths involving fentanyl police are trying their best to seize the drug quicker. Because the drug can actually be absorbed through the skin and eyes, officers have to wear hazmat suits in order to seize fentanyl. The hazmats suits that they wear are the same suits that health care workers used to avoid being contaminated by Ebola. This current problem with fentanyl has been around since 2007, but lately, the death rates have risen through the roofs. The main problem is that Americans seemed to be addicted to it and because of that there is a big profit being made for drug dealers. Other drugs like heroin, hydrocodone, OxyContin and Norco have nothing on fentanyl! For example, one hydrocodone pills can be sold for thirty dollars, but one kilogram of fentanyl powder can be sold for over 3,300
