Social Media's Negative Effects On Young People

Social Media can be defined as forms of electronic communication through websites to share information and ideas with people across the world. Everyone that has a smartphone or some sort of access to the internet will uses some type of social media; whether it is a simple text message or a simple email to a friend. Many people use social media to keep up with their family members and friends, and keep up with what is going on around the world. Some experts and the older generation believe that the heightened popularity of social media has caused the younger generation to become socially inactive and lazy. I have learned some of this from playing video games online. I play online with friends and others across that world for maybe a few hours a day during the weekend and maybe an hour during the normal week. While I play video games, I will never see or meet that person I am playing. Which almost gives me a certain security blanket. Yes, it may sound childish, but playing video games online has taught me to how to ignore certain things and how to take any type of criticism and put into my everyday life. In other words, playing games online with people I do not know has given me the backbone and the self-esteem to stand up for myself in a situation that without doing so, I would not have stood up for myself. Social media plays an active role in everyone’s life till this day and it will until the end of time. In a study started in January 2016, out of the 7.395 billion people in the United States, 3.419 billion of them used the internet, and 2.307 billion of that used social media websites (Chaffey). Without social media, I would not be the person that I am today and that is why I believe social is a great gift from mankind. As an individual, I love the ability to just pull out my phone or my laptop and just be able to press a screen and see what is going on with one of my best friends on Facebook, or even see who won the basketball championship game last night. The older generation and a few others may believe that Social media is not good nor healthy for society because it takes the personal social aspect out of our everyday lives; although I disagree with that. Social media actually increases the ability for people to be sociable in person, because social media gives people the confidence to be themselves in person and not be afraid. I believe that social media is a very positive gift because it has kept me in touch with all my friends and family, keeps me up to date on what is going on with my favorite interest and hobbies in the world, and it teaches me how to do with people over an online perspective and in
