College is an institution which can be analyzed from the structural-functionalist perspective. As a student, I am part of an educational system comprised of teachers, students, administrators, and faculty. It is a social structure which is composed of many individuals’ working cooperatively together. I am able to go to school to better myself. I can choose my class schedule and what courses to take. These manifest functions allow me to feel in control of my life. However, I cannot necessary guarantee I will succeed. Even if I try my best there always remains a possibility that I will fail. These unintended consequences, or latent functions, are things I can’t control and make me feel less in control of my life.
Technology, as seen through the symbolic-interactionist perspective, allows us to socially interact with one another in new and unique ways. Social media is one aspect of technology that exemplifies social interaction at the micro-level. We are able to interact with one another through symbols such as text, audio, video, and emoticons. Technology allows me to feel more in control of my life because I am able to keep in touch with friends and family instantly. It also allows access to unlimited information at the touch of a button. In modern times there is more equality between the jobs done by men and women. Jobs that have been traditionally done by men, such as engineers and mechanics, can now be done by women. Conversely, jobs that have been traditionally done by women, such as stewardesses, hairdressers, and nurses are now being done by men. This diversity makes me feel more in control because it affords me more job opportunities and careers which to choose from. Since the playing field is more equal now, however, it also means I am faced with more competition and conflict for employment opportunities. In this respect, it makes me feel less in control of my
