Small Group Observation

Observing a mild to severe 3rd to 6th grade special education classroom. The students work in small groups with the teacher or a classroom aide. They are familiar with the routine of the classroom and the members in their group. As students rotate from one table to the next they are working on different activities as some of their peers. In the table with the classroom teacher, she would be working on sight words with one group, and then change it to practice writing within the lines for the next group. The flexibility of the grouping of the students’ demonstrates how the students’ accommodations were being met. Students were given a learning task they were attempting to master. From the observation, I learned how a class of students can range in academic area. The teacher was aware of all her students’ academic levels …show more content…
Using the small group’s methods to individualized instruction is important in a special education classroom because every student has a different learning level. By seeing how small groups are implemented and how the lessons change based on students learning is connected to how special education teacher need to differentiate instruction to meet all learners need. Creating different lessons for each group helps students meet their IEP goal and modifications are made to help them learn. Seeing the structure of how groups are implemented in the classroom emphasizes the role of a special education teacher to make accommodations and modifications to help students meet their IEP goal. Based on coursework, each of the students learning was being met with the use of small groups and the classroom teacher had specific tasks for each student. Seeing the implementation of small groups created an understanding on how to meet the needs of students learning when they are at different academic
