When Temple’s mother Eustacia took her to the doctor when she was 4 years old to figure out what was wrong with her (i.e. why she wasn’t talking, why she didn’t like affection) and he diagnosed her as autistic. Eustacia had questions as to how she became autistic and when she would grow out of it and he then suggested speaking with her husband to explain to him. Back then most women did not attend college and if they did it was for a very short time because they want to college to get married. She had indeed finished college and earned her degree at Harvard University making it clear that she is very intelligent and capable to understand his explanation of Temple’s diagnosis.
