When joining an international organisation (such as the EU), one has to give up a certain amount of sovereignty because there are rules and laws that one must abide by in order to stay in the union. The EU restrict British law makers. The mass immigration of Eastern European people coming into the United Kingdom, as a result of the free movement of people that comes with being part of the European Union, has caused a lot of controversy about the sovereignty of the UK’s borders. The Eastern Europeans come to the United Kingdom as there are better working standards, minimum wage, and quality of life in the United Kingdom (on average). These people are within their rights to enter and work in the country due to the EU’s migration laws. But this puts more competition for jobs, possibly putting people from the United Kingdom at a disadvantage when it comes to jobs hence the popular phrase “they’re coming to steal our jobs”, as if the jobs were a birth right to them because they happened to be born in the United Kingdom. The rise of right wing parties such as the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and Britain First want to give British people a better advantage at getting these jobs (even if they’re not as qualified as the Eastern Europeans). Early in the Cold War era, there was a relationships between China and Russia. This was due to the fact that the international system was bipolar in that there was two ‘blocs’; the western capitalist bloc led by the united states, and the eastern communist bloc led by the USSR. The shared communist ideologies and opposition to the United States allowed cooperation between China and the USSR. However, during the era of détente China’s relationship with the USA grew, which resulted in China becoming the economic giant that it is today. The USSR’s relationship with the USA still caused tension, in fact there was a ‘battle’ to gain more territory which can be explained by the realist theory of the balance of power. Nearer the end of the Cold War, the communist ideology of the USSR was proven to be a weakness when Mikhail Gorbachev came into power and introduced two important policies: perestroika and glasnost. These allowed the citizens of the USSR to view the ‘outside world’ which in turn caused the downfall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Russia was then economically devastated and ended the Cold War. China, on the other hand, kept its relationship with the USA and started to grow economically.
