It is my view that while Marijuana can be a controlled medical substance, it is still an addictive gateway drug with serious mental and physical symptoms. Marijuana can also have dire consequences on people around you while under the influence of marijuana. Cannabis Sativa is known by many name, most commonly marijuana. According to one of my sources Cannabis Sativa is currently one oldest plants cultivated by humanity going back 12,000 years” (Agata 1). It originated then first in Asia then it moved to the Middle East through Arab merchants. After that it moved to Europe in the 1400’s and then to the Americas after the Europeans established colonies there. Marijuana has thrived here ever since. It is currently viewed by the government as a controlled medical substance, and as such is legal is in some states for medical use. California was the first state to legalize marijuana for medical use opening the door for other states to follow. To date 23 states have legalized medical marijuana. Some states such as Colorado have legalized marijuana for both medical and recreational use. This has resulted in the current debate on whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Which leads me to my main argument that marijuana should not be legalized. It is argued and justified that marijuana should be legal so that it can be used as a controlled medical substance, but even then it still maintains all the symptoms and risks it has always had.
